Summary
No diet will completely cure your arthritis, but a restricted diet can help you reduce flare-ups and joint pains.

Arthritis is a condition mostly associated with aging people. It is a condition that brings about inflammation and pain/stiffness in the joints of the body. There are several kinds of arthritis including psoriatic, rheumatoid, and osteoarthritis. However, the treatment for all of these kinds of arthritis involves the reduction of inflammation.

Certain diets and food types can increase painful swellings, so your doctor may recommend an elimination diet to help determine the exact food combination that bothers you the most.

Note that no diet will completely cure your arthritis, but a restricted diet can help you reduce flare-ups and joint pains.

Here are seven foods that will worsen your arthritis—avoid them.

  1. Tobacco

Like most things associated with health, tobacco has the capacity to increase complications associated with arthritis.

Technically, tobacco cannot be regarded as a food but it is a substance that is quite harmful to the body.

In fact, studies have shown that smokers have a higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis which creates extensive damage to joints, bones, and connective tissues.

If you don’t already have arthritis, you can prevent it by doing away with tobacco-related products. If you have been diagnosed with arthritis, however, then you need to quit smoking. Tobacco makes arthritis treatment very difficult and also causes complications if you ever need surgery.

  1. Dairy Products

The protein contained in dairy products can cause irritation in the tissues surrounding your joints. Though this may not affect everyone, adults are already not supposed to have too much dairy added to their daily diet.

Try to eliminate dairy from your diet gradually and see if the pain you feel reduces. Protein food sources such as beans, tofu, nut butter, and spinach can easily serve as replacements for dairy products.

  1. Salt

Frequent salt intake increases your chances of having joint inflammation, so it is definitely one of the foods you need to slowly kick out of your diet.

Salt intake may not affect everyone, but many people have developed the habit of taking in way too much. Reducing sodium (Salt) intake is good for your overall health and not arthritis alone.

Eat mostly home cooked meals and avoid fast foods as much as you can. Fast foods contain a lot of salt and other unhealthy preservatives.

  1. Alcohol

Excessive alcohol intake causes gout which in turn increases arthritis, especially in the feet. It also overworks your liver, weakens it, and lead to even more inflammation.

Also, if you are always drinking, you may not be in the right state of mind to make healthy decisions such as diet control, exercise, etc.

  1. Fats

Eating foods with a lot of saturated fat content will only worsen arthritis inflammation especially in fat (Adipose) tissue.

Adipose inflammation can also be a major indication of the fact that you are at risk of heart disease.

Red meats, processed and fried foods, dairy products (full fat) are rich sources of saturated fat.

A 2009 study conducted by Mount Sinai School of Medicine showed that natural body defenses are stronger and inflammation is greatly reduced when saturated fat is reduced in the diet.

  1. High-Temperature Foods

High temperature, fried, grilled, and pasteurized foods release cytokines when eaten and increase inflammatory messages all over the body.

Realistically, you still need to cook many of your meals. However, you can avoid meats with char marks and add more salads and partly cooked veggies.

  1. Sugar

Inflammation causes pain in people who have arthritis, and a high daily intake of added sugar causes just that.

This is because of a rise in advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which happens when protein or fat in the body reacts with excess sugar. AGEs are responsible for aging, increased risk factors for heart disease, diabetes, and inflammation

Every arthritis patient is different and you may find that some of the food items listed above do not trouble you. However, it is important to carry out a diet check along with your doctor’s guidance to determine your food preferences.

Doing this will help you live better and equally enhance your treatment process.
